Teknik fotografi HDR atau (High Dynamic Range), sudah bukan hal yang asing lagi. Dikembangkan sejak zaman fotografi film dengan metode penggabungan negatif film, lalu berkembang metode seleksi tonal dengan dodging dan burning, lalu merambah ke teknologi kamera digital. Pada teknologi digital ini idenya adalah mengambil foto yang sama dengan beberapa eksposur lalu digabungkan menjadi satu foto (blending) baik secara manual dengan post-processing atau secara otomatis bawaan kamera atau program kamera. Kemampuan ini bahkan tidak hanya dimiliki oleh kamera canggih DSLR, namun juga kamera saku bahkan kamera bawaan ponsel pintar pun sudah dibekali kemampuan ini.
HDR or High Dynamic Range is a popular technique in post processing images taken by camera. It produces very high dynamic range of details. Established since analogue camera, HDR images was created by combining film negative then the new technique was developed by tones selection with dodging and burning technique during film development (from wikipedia). In digital era, the idea of this technique was developed by combining the same frame of photos in different exposure in post processing software of in-camera-processing algorithm. This ability is not only available in decent dslr, but also prosumer and pocket camera, even the smartphone
Pada post-processing atau rekayasa digital, dikenal juga metode pseudo-hdr, dimana foto eksposur tunggal bisa dibuat menjadi HDR dengan memisah-misahkannya menjadi beberapa eksposur lalu digabung kembali. Metode ini memiliki kelemahan, yaitu tidak bisa menyelamatkan kehilangan detail akibat clipping, atau menerjemahkan cahaya menjadi 100% putih atau 100% hitam akibat range kontras yang tidak dapat ditoleransi sensor kamera
In post-processing, there also pseudo-HDR technique where single image can be converted into HDR by separate editing the image into several images with different exposure then re-combined into HDR image. This method has weakness, which is can not regain the detail from clipping, a weakness in digital photography, where high contras range will make the light image as plain white and dark image as plain black.
Foto HDR yang baik, menurut saya, harus seperti prinsip awalnya, yaitu mempertahankan detail se-natural mungkin, meskipun banyak foto HDR di dunia maya, dimana kontras dan saturasi dibuat sangat ekstrim, sehingga foto tampak seperti lukisan. Namun yang pasti, pemilihan rentang eksposur harus tepat, karena jika kurang tepat, akan muncul seperti pendaran "glow" yang terlihat jelas di perbatasan dua kontras yang tinggi.
For me, good HDR images shall be based on the original purpose of HDR imaging, which is to preserve detail that is can not be captured by camera sensor due to high contrast. Nowadays the HDR images can be created surrealism-ly, painterly, even like an abstract painting. The good HDR shall be made with good selection of exposure range, because if it misfits, an obvious glowing area will be produced in borders of high contrast region.
